What Are RIGs?
Regional Interest Groups (RIGs) are local networks that connect individuals interested in sexual medicine within specific geographic regions. Organized through the Sexual Medicine Society of North America (SMSNA), RIGs bring together medical students, residents, faculty, and other professionals to foster collaboration, mentorship, and education in the field.
These groups provide opportunities to explore clinical and research topics in sexual medicine while building relationships with peers and leaders in the specialty.
The RIG initiative was launched in 2022 under the leadership of then-SMSNA President Dr. Mohit Khera and Dr. Peter Tsambarlis, former Chair of the Medical Student and Resident Committee. The program was initially created to connect medical students and residents who share an interest in sexual medicine and to introduce trainees to the field as a potential career path.
Under the leadership of SMSNA President Dr. Tobias Köhler, and the Medical Student and Resident Committee led by Dr. Matt Ziegelmann (Chair) and Dr. Charles Welliver (Vice Chair), the initiative is expanding to the broader SMSNA community. A key goal of this expansion is to establish 50+ RIGs across North America, creating a strong network that supports mentorship, collaboration, and education in sexual medicine.
Building the Future of Sexual Medicine
Through Regional Interest Groups, SMSNA is building a network that connects individuals across North America who are passionate about advancing sexual medicine. By supporting mentorship, education, and collaboration at the local level, RIGs help strengthen the next generation of leaders in the field.
