Believe it or not, sex dreams occur on a regular basis for many people. Depending on where someone is from, talking about these may be considered taboo, or they could be seen as a fun discussion topic at your weekly brunch with the ladies. Regardless of how you view sex dreams, a recent study had researchers asking.
As part of a larger sleep study, several researchers surveyed 301 adult women from the U.S. to see how often sex dreams happened and what the potential psychological implications could be. They also looked into how sex dreams affected their personal relationships, daily life, and understanding of sexuality.
How Often do Women Have Sex Dreams?
Almost every participant (99.67%) said they had had a sex dream at least once in their lifetime. Over half of participants (54.55%) said they have a sex dream a few times every month, and a smaller number (9.09%) said they have a sex dream a few times every week. Only 0.33% of participants said they had never experienced a sex dream. Researchers say this is consistent across other studies about erotic dreams, yet the general population continues to believe these dreams are not very common.
Interestingly, those who were in long-term relationships tended to have sex dreams more frequently, and those with full-time jobs tended to have sex dreams less often.
Women’s Sex Dreams May Affect the Rest of the Day
The majority of participants (44%) stated that their sex dreams did not have a lasting impact on their daily life. A smaller number (31%) said that their sex dreams impacted their mood throughout the day (researchers did not say if this was negative or positive). An even smaller number (29%) said that their sex dreams influenced their thoughts and behaviors throughout the day, and 25% said they felt distracted throughout the day. Researchers say this may mean sex dreams can extend beyond sleep but may also shape one’s emotional tone after waking up.
In the same vein, 11% said their sex dreams impacted their relationship, meaning increased intimacy or tension. Sex dreams may have the potential to escalate or hinder personal relationships afterward.
Dreaming About a New Gender Isn’t That Concerning
Researchers note there were nearly equal numbers of same-sex and opposite-sex content in the participants' erotic dreams. While many may find some gender content more alarming than others, the authors say this shouldn’t be something to stress over. It’s likely that the brain is using the safety of sleep as a space to explore identity, intimacy, and desire. There are no outside influences to pass judgment on your internal thoughts during dreams – especially one’s own understandings of social norms and personal values.
After waking up, many participants said they had an increased heart rate (57%), they were sweating (35%), they had anxiety (34%), and their muscles were tense (23%). Only one out of five (21%) participants said they had no post-dream physiological response. Researchers believe this is similar to what one would feel while stressed or aroused, meaning sex dreams can cause sympathetic nervous system responses that mirror stress reactions while awake.

If you have ever wondered how your penis compares to others in terms of size, you are not alone. Many men are curious to know how their penises stack up compared to the average. Unfortunately, general curiosity can sometimes give way to full-on obsession and anxiety about penis size. This can be an unhealthy and often unnecessary fixation, especially because most men who think their penises are too small have perfectly normal-sized penises.
The term “jelqing” refers to a set of penis stretching exercises that some believe can make the penis bigger. Although the practice has gained attention and popularity in blogs and internet forums in recent years, there is no scientific evidence that it is an effective way to permanently increase the size of one’s penis. In fact, in some cases, jelqing may actually cause damage to the penis, so it is a good idea to get all the facts before setting off to try it.
