Program Director: Jay Sandlow, MD

Fellowship Overview

The Medical College of Wisconsin Department of Urology has developed a one-year fellowship in Andrology, Male Infertility, and Sexual Dysfunction. This fellowship is designed for candidates interested in academic andrology and is particularly geared toward those who plan to develop and/or lead an academic program.

The fellowship provides high-volume surgical training, with approximately 60% focused on reproductive medicine and andrology and 40% on sexual health.

Services include:

  • Peyronie's Disease: As the main referral center in the state, the program provides comprehensive care, including in-office curvature assessments, duplex ultrasound, verapamil injections, Xiaflex injections, penile traction, penile plication, plaque incision and grafting, and penile implants.
  • Erectile Dysfunction: Diagnostic and treatment opportunities include physical examinations, Doppler ultrasounds performed in the clinic, and surgical interventions. Patients are managed with a full range of medical and surgical options, including PDE5 inhibitors, intracavernosal injections (ICI), vacuum erection devices (VED), malleable implants, and three-piece penile implants.
  • Male Infertility: Extensive patient evaluation and treatment are provided, with 1.5 days per week dedicated to infertility-specific clinics with Drs. Dietrich and Sandlow. Treatments include medical hormonal manipulation, microsurgical varicocele repair, vasectomy reversal using both vasoepididymostomy and vasovasostomy, microTESE, TESA, oncoTESE, and TURED. Opportunities are also available for penile vibratory stimulation (PVS) and electroejaculation (EEJ) for sperm retrieval. Fellows may participate in the oncofertility program, which serves a substantial patient population.
  • Low Testosterone: Patients are evaluated and managed using a variety of therapies, including testosterone injections, Natesto, gel-based therapies, hCG, and clomiphene. The primary focus is on fertility preservation and restoration.
  • Vasectomies: The program offers high-volume, no-scalpel vasectomy training with Drs. Sandlow and Dietrich.
  • Chronic Scrotal Pain: Patients are evaluated and treated using multimodal therapy, spermatic cord injections, and microsurgical denervation.
VA Clinic and Surgical Services: Fellows participate in independently run clinics and operating room sessions, providing opportunities to develop clinical independence and teaching skills.

Research Focus

  • Male Infertility: Research focuses on studies evaluating infertility treatments and outcomes. Opportunities include collaboration with UCSF and Fellow on database reviews examining access to semen analysis, vasectomy follow-up, and epidemiological studies of semen parameters. Access to Fellow's extensive database is available.
  • Vasectomy: Research includes patient population studies and treatment outcomes. Dr. Sandlow serves on the guidelines committee.
  • Peyronie's Disease: Research focuses on surgical techniques, outcomes, and collagenase treatment methods.
  • Erectile Dysfunction: Research focuses on regenerative therapies.
  • Men's Health: Research opportunities include reviews of standalone clinics and studies related to testosterone therapy.
  • Manuscript Review: Drs. Sandlow and Dietrich serve as reviewers for multiple urologic journals. Fellows may have opportunities to participate in manuscript reviews and editorial decisions for *The Journal of Urology* and other publications.
