A Look Back: SMSNA Founding Members Share Their Journey

Today at the 25th SMSNA Annual Fall Scientific Meeting, Dr. Hossein Sadeghi-Nejad, the society's first official Historian, conducted interviews with founding members Dr. Ira Sharlip and Dr. John Mulcahy. These sessions provided a unique glimpse into the origins of the SMSNA and the evolution of sexual medicine, particularly prosthetic urology, over the past 25 years.

Drs. Sharlip and Mulcahy shared personal stories about their early days in urology, reflecting on the challenges and milestones that shaped their careers. Both pioneers were instrumental in establishing the society, and their passion for advancing sexual medicine was palpable throughout the discussions. They spoke fondly of their early involvement with the SMSNA, recounting the society's growth from a small group of dedicated professionals into the leading organization it is today.

These conversations also offered advice for younger clinicians entering the field, with insights that provided valuable lessons for the next generation of sexual medicine specialists, highlighting the enduring legacy of the SMSNA’s founders.
